Moderating Rules

Moderating a thread or post in which oneself is an involved participant runs a high risk of conflict of interest. Best to pass to another moderator for independent consideration.

I've been a moderator at a music forum for 6 or 7 years.
The rules posted here are generally correct.
It takes all kind to make a world.
For the most part it's almost always an engaged and knowledgable
forum member who is approached to take on a moderator's postion.
(who show a degree of civility in their posts.)

Bottom line...be fair and considerate.

I do not contribute as much as I should and I wish I had more to offer. I appreciate the forum and the members who post here. It will not mean much of anything to anyone but I cannot continue participating while this type of thing is going on. I won’t be part of any forum where the new cop gets to edit history. ..

As a mod on another forums, we don't edit posts there, either. Different forums have different policies, to be sure. On diyAudio we do delete rule breaking posts and sometimes do clean up of OT posts. Be we don't edit the content of posts - only delete those that break the rules. The whole post goes or stays.
Of course on this forum, a member can edit his own post long after the fact. So history can be changed here.

John, as a new mod you need to go slowly. It takes awhile to get the feel for it. And you don't have the help of a more experienced mod team the way the bigger forums do. All new mods get over zealous, it's part of the process. When in doubt, do nothing.

Hi Michael ! That's what I did.I deleted the post as it had nothing to do with the Topic and was derogatory.People having issue about editing posts that members can change 5 years from now is ridiculous! I have a good idea what it is really about ! I've only been doing this a few days, I mean really.I'll send you a PM on what's really going on here.Iposted my own comments that after reflecting on I deleted as well.

1.Who's post did I edit ?? I deleted one post from 1 member that was off topic and derogatory.
2. I edited/deleted my own posts Hello !!

Hello All,

Sorry I was out of pocket when all this happened.

AB offered to help me out by being a Moderator - it would make things easier for me, and give a younger fellow some experience in handing our Forum, should something happen to me someday.

My philosophy/general operating principle on how to moderate this Forum has always been basically this:

The Altec family is a family, and, as such, care about each other and, of course, Altec, and, therefore, though little schisms might arise once in a great while that need my attention, most of the time our folks do a good job of working things out like the adults we are.

That's pretty much it. We've only had a very few times when the conversation got our of hand and i had to step in and calm things down - ya'll are very good at taking care of yourselves. With the exception of RomyTheCat and one or two of his alias', I've banned almost no one in all these years.

In retrospect, I guess I should have sat down with AB and kind of filled him in on my management style, rather than presuming he'd do it the same way because he's watched how I operate. Of course, going back to adjust posts before one becomes a Moderator isn't acceptable.

Please forgive my negligence in that department, and accept my pledge to visit with him tonight on the phone about it and get things ironed out.

In the meantime, would it be acceptable to everyone for all of us to say this was a learning experience for AB and I and let it drop and go back to normal operations?

Again - my deepest apologies for not giving him some guidelines first.


Would it be too much to ask everyone to let bygones be bygones and move forward?

That's what makes us all individuals John. What you thought was a proper course of action appears to have raised the eyebrows of others. I hope this experience leaves you only a little bruised and that you continue. Nice of you to volunteer your time to help all of us and especially Todd.

I am familiar with the non-rewarding side of moderating but hopefully your love of Altec will help you soldier on and put this behind you.
